Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – The Movement for Democratic Change -Alliance (MDC-A) leader Nelson Chamisa, ‘s much anticipated hope of the nation address rally which was supposed to be conducted at the Africa Unity Square turned into a catastrophe as members of the riot Police thronged the venue and dispersed the large crowd earlier on today.
Some of Chamisa’s supporters were assaulted by the police including local journalists. Prior to the rally, the Police had permitted the rally to take place but not in the CBD.
However, Chamisa castigated the move conducted by the Police, “this is our story. The story of our struggle. Bans, prohibitions, beatings, poisoning, assassinations, abductions, arrests and persecution.”
Vice-president of the MDC-A Tendai Biti, concurred with Chamisa, “this is the real Emmerson Mnangagwa government on display. It has closed all democratic space and uses violence to enforce its rule by brutality.
Emmerson’s illegitimate regime of having unlawfully banned us from use of Africa Unity Square has now cordoned off Harvest House and Nelson Mandela Avenue . This is truly a fascist regime beyond any shadow of redemption,” said Biti.
Commenting on the sidelines of the incident legal expert Alex Magaisa said, “this is typically apologist reasoning. What is meant by starting wars with the system? A party leader wants to address supporters and it’s referred to as starting a war.”
