The Church of England’s national assembly gave a strong backing to the principle of allowing women bishops by voting overwhelmingly in favour of their proposals on Wednesday.

Since the previous legislation failed to pass in the General Synod a year ago, the Church of England has been under pressure from the public and politicians to introduce women bishops.

The General Synod then voted 378 to eight in favour of the move to pave way for this historic vote which will take place as early as next year on introducing women bishops.

James Langstaff, a leading women bishops supporter appreciated the result of the vote but warned against “complacency.”

“Though we are hugely encouraged… it is not a cause of complacency, there is a lot of work to be done.

“People would have voted in favour of this because it is about continuing the process. Who may or may not vote in favour of the package at the end of the day… and that is a reality,” said
Langstaff.

The proposals which will be submitted to the General Synod in February, will appear before each diocese before returning to the Synod again in July or November 2014.

The parliament also has to approve the legislation.
