JOHANNESBURG, South Africa. (News Of The South) – A South African based Zimbabwean freelance journalist Mxolisi Ncube suspected of being Baba Jukwa has slammed those investigating the case of being insincere.
Baba Jukwa was a faceless whistle blower who was exposing dirty dealings in the Zanu PF through his facebook page. Ncube told News of the South that when he read on papers that he was wanted for treason he went to the Zimbabwean Consulate in Johannesburg in July 2014 to clear his name. After being grilled by the suspected Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) agents, Ncube gave three of his phones a Samsung, Nokia Asher 120 and Nokia Lumia 920 to assist in the investigations. Ncube said he cooperated with the investigators by surrendering himself at the Consulate and handed over his three phones after they promised to give them back to him in three days time.
It’s almost two years and they have not done so. He said, “I am now angry with those people. I gave them my phones trusting that they wanted to unravel the truth about Baba Jukwa but now I am beginning to think they are thieves. They have not communicated with me since that day.”
They had promised to check the phone to see who had communicated with him. Ncube said he has been moved from a lamp post to the pillar by the Consulate officials. The phone was supposed to be handed over to the investigating office Assistant Commissioner Crispen Makedenge for examination.
When Ncube inquires with the Consulate staff he is told that the officials who received the phone are no longer based in Johannesburg. He also showed News of the South a documentary proof from the Consulate which shows that he handed over the phones. Ncube also said, “After I had given them my phones they hacked into my facebook and emails and tried to change the passwords. I received messages that someone in Harare tried to change the password to my accounts.
volunteered to surrender myself so that they won’t waste state resources looking for me but they are not being genuine in their dealings with me.”
The journalist said he expected the investigators to come back to him as per their agreement and say what they have found out. Ncube also said he is surprised about how the transfer of the Zimbabwean Consulate officials could affect the return of his phones. He also said he was suspected of being Baba Jukwa because he used to interview and write stories about him. Ncube also said they are still pursuing the US$2 million lawsuit against some Zimpapers publications like Chronicle, The Herald and Sunday News. They are being represented by Obert Gutu in their civil lawsuit.
He said: “These papers wrote some libellous things. They labelled me a liar, terrorist and fraudster. I am not Baba Jukwa and will never be him.”
Some of the Baba Jukwa suspects includes the Zimbabwean publisher Wilf and wife Trish Mbanga, UK based systems engineer Simon Chifamba, Gerorge Chirakasha, Anomie Drew Piniel Nhokodzo, Romeo Masemburi and Sarudzai Florence.
