Harare. – (News Of The South) -The Chevrons skipper Elton Chigumbura insisted that there will not be any disparities in his camp as his charges are not going to be dishing out any special treatment to the big guns in our group. `We are going to approach every opponent just as the same and I don`t see any need for us to be afraid of them just because they are our big brothers, we see them equally and like I said, to us our opponents are all the same no need to be afraid`. The skipper went on to affirm the fact that they would not chicken out on the big guns and they are willing to make them sweat for it if they want to win the matches as he assured us that they would not be any freebies.
In a send-off ceremony for the Chevrons held by Zimbabwe Cricket at the Town House yesterday in the capital before the team`s departure for New Zealand later today at the Harare International Airport, the players tried to reduce the stress levels as they regrouped and took time out to meet their beloved fans and thank them for their `undying support`. The event had the Acting Mayor as Guest of Honor who was handed an official 2015 World Cup jersey, autographed by the players and also the rest of the squad was in its attendance including Dav Whatmore and his entire backroom staff. The mayor on the day insisted how the hope of Zimbabwean Sport in general solely lay in the hands of Zimbabwe Cricket which is going to fly the colors of the country in Australia when other sports are failing to qualify for regional tournaments let alone make it past the first stage of qualification.
The question which was on most of our lips was on how Prosper Utseya had recuperated following his injury scare during training and yesterday I got a chance to speak to one of the coaches who ensured me that Prosper was okay. `It was just an ordinary injury it always happens in cricket otherwise there`s nothing much to worry about`, he assured me. Coach Davenell `Dav` Whatmore had earlier confirmed the incident which took place during training and forced the veteran to sit out during training. “The team spirit is good, everyone is happy and working hard we`ve had just one injury scare with Prosper who was unable to train in the last 2 and a half days because of a bruised foot, but we`re confident he`ll be okay. He`ll be returning to some form of work rate on Tuesday apart from that we`ve utilized as much as we can every minute that was available`.
One thing I personally liked about the players was that most of them looked fired up for the tourney especially the skipper Elton Chigumbura and they seemed hungry to serve their country well especially Hamilton Masakadza could not even contain his joy as the fans showed up in their respectable numbers together with the media fraternity which was also at its best. If one ever doubted the player’s commitment to the team and if any disappointments are to arise during the course of the tournament then it would simply be a case of a better opposition otherwise the mood in the camp is absolutely phenomenal as the players are certainly ready for the showpiece down under.
Zimbabwe Cricket had cancelled their proposed training camp in Dubai most likely due to the unavailability of funds. They will depart for Johannesburg tomorrow before connecting to New Zealand where they will continue with their preparations. The Chevrons are scheduled to play the Northern Districts in New Zealand before the ICC programme kicks-off which will ensure them to play official warm up matches against New Zealand and Sri Lanka before the actual tournament kicks-off on Valentine’s Day with the Chevrons squaring off in a Southern African derby against the Proteas on 15 February.
