Malawi (News of The South) -The Malawi Police Service has confirmed the arrest of 68 people in connection with various criminal activities during the last week’s violent demonstrations that took place in all the country’s major cities.
The police spokesperson Superintendent James Kadadzera said the police have managed to effect arrests of some thugs who took advantage of the demonstration to steal and destroy property for other people.
“We have managed to arrest 68 people for various criminal acts during the demonstrations and some of the stolen property has been recovered and this is an ongoing process several arrests will be made as time goes on,” Kadadzera said.
The police publicist further said that out of the 68 arrested, 39 have been apprehended in the capital city, Lilongwe while the other 29 have been arrested in Mzuzu city and Rumphi District.
Out of the 68 arrested, 39 are from Lilongwe, while 18 have been arrested in Mzuzu city and the other 11 are in Rumphi District.
A total of 231 bicycles were also stolen from the Mzuzu Agriculture Development Division (MZADD) and the police have reported having recovered 55 of the stolen bicycles and 4 computer monitors and processors.
Meanwhile the chairperson of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Timothy Mtambo has distanced his organisation away from any act of violence or any criminal activity and he has asked the police to bring to book all criminals.
“Our demonstrations were peaceful, and let the police take to court all those involved in any criminal activities, we cannot condone any act of violence in the name of our peaceful demonstrations,” Mtambo said.
Meanwhile the HRDC has asked the president, Arthur Peter Mutharika to evoke his powers and fire the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Jane Ansah or risk another spate of demonstrations.
Meanwhile those that have been arrested in connection with various criminal activities in the just recent demonstrations will be taken to court very soon.
