Guinea Foreign Minister Francois Fall says his country has managed to bring the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus under control.
Speaking to reporters after meeting his South African counterpart Maite Nkoana Mashabane in Pretoria, Monday Fall said authorities in his country had acted quickly to stem the spread of the virus which however claimed more than 100 lives.
“We are pleased to say we have controlled the spread of the epidemic. We have even managed to cure some of those infected,” said Fall. He said it was the first time Guinea had faced such an epidemic adding that strict measures were being taken to prevent it from spreading. The Ebola outbreak began in the country’s southern forests, but spread to the capital Conakry.
A total of 157 cases have been recorded so far in Guinea with 101 deaths. The outbreak has also spread to Liberia where 10 people have died out of the 21 recorded cases.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says this latest outbreak is the most challenging since the virus was first detected in 1976 in the DRC then Zaire. There is no known vaccine or cure for Ebola.
