The Nerazzurri icon Javier Zanetti said goodbye to San Siro on Saturday night and he thanked all those who have given him support throughout his career at the club, before vowing to continue defending the Inter Jersey in an emotional farwell following their 4-1 thumping of Lazio.
Zanetti, 40 , started on the bench last night, a move which did not go down well with home fans, but was later introduced to a standing ovation.
Since his arrival at the club in 1995, Zanetti has been an incredible decorated player in the club’s history, lifting 16 trophies over the course of his time at the club.
At the end of the match, Inter staff gave a visible-emotional Zanetti a guard of honour, before he himself took the microphone and said his thanks.
“Thank you everyone”, he began.”You’ve no idea how emotional this moment is.To say you are all fantastic in not enough.
“I want to thank everyone who has been close to me at any moment.I want to thank my wife Paula and the family we raised together here.
“My father, who is in front of TV in Argentina right now.I thank my mother in the heavens who is as happy as I am right now.I thank President Thohir who allowed me to be with this wonderful Inter family.I thank my team-mates who showed me so much respect and affection”.
The Argentine will now become the Club’s sporting director and insisted to continue working hard off the pitch for the club.
