The Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors, coach Michael Nees is under immense pressure due to the team’s poor performance. A section of fans is unhappy with the results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, leading to criticism over the team’s struggles. Despite qualifying for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, the German expatriate coach’s campaign was cut short after the Warriors’ elimination was confirmed last week following back-to-back 1-0 losses to Benin and Rwanda on matchdays 7 and 8, respectively.

The Warriors are yet to register a win in their group, which consists of Benin, Rwanda, Lesotho, Nigeria, and South Africa, and currently sit at the bottom with no victories after eight rounds of matches. This extends Nees’ difficult campaign, which has seen just two wins, eight draws, and three losses since his appointment as head coach.

However, former Warriors defense stalwart Kaitano Tembo has urged patience in defense of Michael Nees. “Everyone is disappointed, and it’s understandable because people want results,” Tembo said. “But to be fair to the coach, there’s still a lot to be done. Michael Nees arrived when the World Cup Qualifiers had already started, and he’s still managed to qualify for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations. The next objective is clear: to perform better at the tournament.”

Under Nees’ guidance, the Warriors have seen the return of Knowledge Musona, who had announced his retirement, and Khama Billiat, who had also done the same. Both players are now part of the Warriors squad. The team is set to play their last two World Cup Qualifiers against South Africa on October 8 and Lesotho on October 11 before the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in December, where they’ll face Egypt, Angola, and South Africa in their group.
