While US $ is fast disappearing from almost everyone’s pockets in Zimbabwe, in Chitungwiza town it is double tragedy with taps going dry for six days of the week.
Some residents of unit M of Seke suburb around Kingdom hall say while others receive water like in the morning they might not get any water because of the pumps’ limitations coupled with high demand on the day when water comes.
There are always long queues at the borehole where one can spend the whole day waiting for his or her turn to get water.
Sometimes tempers flare and some end up fighting for water which is now very precious in the town.
One Chitungwiza resident, Oscar Dzitiro said women cannot go for a day without a bath but men can go up to two days.
News Of The South reporters visited the dormitory town and came across two push wagons loaded with 20litre water filled buckets coming from opposite directions rushing for other customers.
Push wagons make a killing during trying periods like this. Water used to come every Friday but these days it comes on Sunday and most Christians are not happy with this change of date because they always have to choose between church and filling containers, washing and cleaning up.
Water rationing has pushed residents to revert to digging wells in their yards but most of them this period are dry.
However, this concept is unhygienic due to frequent bursting of sewer pipes all over residential areas causing sewers to contaminate wells.
