Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – April 7, 2025 – For years, the source of flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s considerable wealth has been a subject of intense speculation among Zimbabweans. With his penchant for luxury cars and high-profile social media displays, questions surrounding the origins of his fortune have persisted. Now, these long-whispered doubts are gaining traction following recent allegations of corruption linked to government contracts.
Adding fuel to the fire, UK-based Zimbabwean journalist Maynard Manyowa recently took to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and YouTube with explosive claims regarding Chivayo’s financial dealings. In his post, Manyowa alleged that at least US800 million of Chivayo’s wealth originated from kickbacks paid by the Ministry of Finance. Specifically, Manyowa cited an instance where the government purportedly paid US23 million for a server that typically costs a mere US$90,000, suggesting significant overpricing and potential illicit gains.
These allegations come on the heels of a major scandal involving the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) and a South African printing firm, Ren-Form. Investigations by anti-corruption authorities are underway into a R570 million (approximately US$30 million) tender for election-related materials. Leaked documents suggest that Ren-Form inflated prices substantially, with Chivayo implicated as a politically connected partner who allegedly facilitated payments to unidentified officials. Notably, the inflated server price mentioned by Manyowa aligns with the pattern of overpricing observed in the ZEC tender investigation, further intensifying scrutiny on Chivayo’s dealings.
Chivayo, known for his close ties to influential figures in Zimbabwean politics, first gained significant public attention after securing a multi-million dollar deal to establish a solar power plant in Gwanda. However, the project stalled, leading to a legal battle where Chivayo’s company, Intratek, successfully sued ZESA Holdings (the state-owned power utility) for US$22 million in damages, despite the initial project’s failure. This and other high-value government contracts have consistently raised eyebrows regarding the transparency and fairness of the procurement processes.
While Chivayo has often flaunted his wealth on social media, gifting luxury vehicles to musicians and religious figures aligned with the ruling ZANU-PF party, the source of his income beyond these government contracts has remained largely opaque. His past includes a conviction for money laundering in 2004, further contributing to public skepticism about his business ethics.
The recent allegations and ongoing investigations underscore the long-standing concerns of Zimbabweans regarding potential corruption and the unexplained wealth of individuals with close connections to the government. As the investigations progress, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on Wicknell Chivayo and the intricacies of his financial empire, potentially leading to a greater understanding of the sources behind his conspicuous displays of affluence. The outcome of these inquiries could have significant implications for public trust and the fight against corruption in Zimbabwe.
