Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Tatenda Mavetera, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, has become a focal point of intense public scrutiny and criticism. Her tenure has been marked by controversial statements and actions that have led many Zimbabweans to question her suitability for office.

One of the most prominent controversies involved her proposal to introduce licensing fees for WhatsApp group administrators. This sparked widespread outrage, with critics arguing that it would stifle freedom of expression and access to information, particularly in a country where social media platforms are crucial for communication.
Beyond this, Mavetera’s public utterances have consistently drawn criticism. She has been accused of making insensitive and disrespectful remarks, often perceived as lacking the gravitas expected of a government minister.

A key flashpoint was her conduct at Heroes Acre during a national event. While leading dancers, she was accused of behavior seen as disrespectful towards Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, with some observers saying that her performance was inappropriate for such a solemn occasion.

Former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s recent statement defending Mavetera has added another layer of complexity to the situation. Mujuru tweeted:

“I’ve been in @TateMavetera shoes before! As a former Vice President of Zimbabwe, I faced similar criticism. But let’s be clear: women deserve respect in government! We can’t have a male-dominated system. Let’s put some respect on Tatenda’s name she’s representing us as women.”

Mujuru’s statement appears to be an attempt to frame the criticism against Mavetera within the context of gender bias. She argues that women in positions of power often face disproportionate scrutiny and that the attacks on Mavetera are partly rooted in a “male-dominated system.” She is emphasizing the importance of supporting women in government and demanding respect for their contributions.
However, Mujuru’s defense has been met with skepticism and further criticism from many Zimbabweans. They argue that the issues surrounding Mavetera are not solely about gender but about her specific actions and statements. Critics contend that her conduct at Heroes Acre, for example, was disrespectful and inappropriate, regardless of her gender. They believe that upholding standards of decorum and professionalism is essential for any public official, regardless of their sex.

The public outcry against Mavetera stems from a broader concern about the quality of governance and the perceived lack of accountability among public officials. Many Zimbabweans feel that her actions undermine the seriousness of her ministerial role and reflect poorly on the government as a whole. The licensing fee proposal, along with her perceived disrespectful conduct, has fueled a narrative of a minister out of touch with the public’s needs and concerns.

In essence, while Joice Mujuru seeks to frame the debate around gender and the need to support women in government, the core of the issue for many Zimbabweans is about competence, respect, and accountability. They argue that these qualities should be the primary criteria for evaluating a public official, regardless of their gender.
