With more Zimbabwean traders taking to the financial markets, a lot of traders may be considering which trading option would suit their trading goals, whether short- or long-term, and objectives better.
Forex trading and stock trading are two of the most popular trading activities today and it is imperative to explore what each entail, and how they measure up against one another, for Zimbabwean traders to decide which is more suited to them.
What is forex trading?
Forex, also known as foreign exchange or FX trading, can simply be defined as the conversion of one currency into another. The forex market is one of the most actively traded financial markets in the world, seeing an average daily trading volume of around $5 trillion.
These currencies are traded amongst participants in the forex market at an agreed price. While a lot of foreign exchange is done with a practical purpose in mind, a vast majority of forex trading is done to earn a profit.
The amount of currency which is traded daily makes price movements of some currencies extremely volatile, and it is this volatility that make forex trading attractive to traders from around the world as it brings the hope and opportunity for substantial profits. However, it also comes with significant risks which may not be suited to all types of traders.

What is stock trading?
Stock trading, on the other hand, is the act of buying and selling the shares of companies frequently with the goal to make short-term profits instead of aiming for long-term gains.
Stock trading involves timing the market, buying stocks when the price is low and selling it once it reaches its peak.
Forex trading versus Stock trading
Stock trading and forex trading are two different ventures, where one involves buying and selling shares of individual companies, the other involves exchanging (buying/selling) simultaneously, the cash minted by two different countries.
Stock trading is the best when the markets are rising. This is due to low liquidity which makes it difficult to sell short in falling markets. However, forex trading can be lucrative in any scenario as each trade involves both buying and selling, and thus liquidity is consistently higher.

Forex traders, like stock traders, also rely heavily on technical analysis to identify profitable price movements that will influence trading behaviour.
