Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – The reopening of schools started last month in September, since then teachers have been on strike with their issues for decent salary increase unresolved.

The government is in the process hiring more teachers. Teachers have made their set of demands to the government, requesting they get protective clothing (PPEs) and to be paid in US dollars. Many have refused to go back to school as the government is not in agreement with the demands.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema said that, the government has recruited over 5 000 teachers this month and plans to recruit more.

Mathema added that Government is working on hiring every qualified teacher in Zimbabwe, approximately 20 000 as part of measures to ensure social distancing in schools.

“The Government has just recruited 5 000
teachers in a drive to employ the over 20 000 unemployed qualified teachers that we had by last November.

I don’t have a breakdown of how many teachers were allocated to each province during the last recruitment but the process has been completed and we are working towards hiring more,”

Students have been on loose for too long without the supervision of teachers at schools and this distracted many leading to suspension and some to be taken back home.

Zimbabwe needs more than 3 000 additional schools to cater for the growing number of learners at both primary and secondary levels, meaning more teachers are needed.
