Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – Zimbabwe’s main hydro plant Kariba is now operating at near full capacity for the first time in two years.
This has come as a relief to the entire country because it enables the state to generate more electricity.
The worst regional drought in four decades shuttered power generation at Kariba, located near the country’s northwestern border, for more than a year and led to daily power cuts of as long as 18 hours in Zimbabwe and neighboring Zambia.
Both Zambia and Zimbabwe rely on Lake Kariba for most of their power generation.
The world’s largest man-made reservoir now has the ability to produce 1,050 megawatts from its previous 750.
According to the Zimbabwe Power Company on Friday it was generating 902 megawatts.
Water levels at Kariba have risen five-fold and the reservoir’s capacity is 41% up from as low as 8% at the beginning of the year.
