The founder of Econet Wireless and telecommunications mogul, Strive Masiyiwa and wife Tsitsi donated 45 Ventilator Intensive Care Unit suites to help the nation in this time of the corona virus.
This information was revealed by Masiyiwa himself when he was talking about the importance of ventilators.
Masiyiwa had been on a hunt for ventilators from private organisations and individuals through his Higher Life Foundation.
Masiyiwa said: “If you have been following developments through serious media and listening to medical experts you will know by now that the Covid-19 virus attacks the lungs and it is most acute, it becomes difficult for the person to breath.
“There is a type of hospital equipment called a Ventilator which is used to keep the person alive whilst they battle with the illness,” he said.
He said that these ventilators are hard to come by and they cost from $15 000 to 100 000 each.
“Business leaders and entrepreneurs in every African country must come together and set up funds to buy ventilators and save lives.
“Do not just wait for governments,” Masiyiwa said.
Masiyiwa went on to say that the ventilators would be shipped to Zimbabwe before end of April.
“This is a drop in the bucket in terms of actual requirements so I hope groups like mining companies, bottling groups, banks and others will follow our example.
“This is not a crisis in which you sit on your hands and provide running commentary,” said Masiyiwa.
