Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) –
The Zimbabwean government has set aside US$2 million for the development of rural roads.
Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA)’s acting chief executive officer, Moses Chigonyati said road networks were vital in promoting industry and commerce in the country.
“We had budgeted $38.4 million (US$2 million) for rural road rehabilitation and of that amount, we have disbursed $22.7 million (US$1.2 million) to 60 Rural District Councils (RDCs).
Some of the RDCs started surfacing their centres using the money we gave them and are also in the process of gravelling their road networks,” said Chigonyati.
Of the country’s 98 000 kilometre road network, 89 percent is made up of unsurfaced roads, while gravel and earth roads make up 47 479 kilometres and 27 532 kilometres, respectively.
