Zambia’s President, Edgar Lungu yesterday commissioned a 32.5 kilowatts solar power station which was donated by Chinese tech giant, Huawei.
The solar power station is expected to power over 300 households, schools as well as a clinic.
“This investment will go a long way in uplifting the lives of our people in rural areas and ensure they contribute meaningfully to national economic growth.
The government has put in place a rigorous programme of addressing lack of electricity in most parts of the rural areas,” said Lungu.
Chinese ambassador to Zambia Li Jie said shortage of power is still a major bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of Zambia and other African countries.
He pointed out that 600 million people in Africa still didn’t have access to electricity, including many rural areas in Zambia.
A couple of weeks ago, the Lusaka City Council approved Huawei’s proposal to turn Lusaka into a Smart City.
