(News of The South) – The current Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi, was yesterday crowned Miss Universe 2019 at the Tyler Perry Studios.
The 26 year-old outmanoeuvred 89 other contestants who were vying for the prestigious crown.
“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful.
I think that it is time that stops today. Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it.
May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine. I proudly state my name Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019.”
Puerto Rico’s Madison Anderson was named the first runner-up and Ashley Alvidrez from Mexico was the second runner-up.
Tunzi is the third South African to win the Miss Universe pageant, following Margaret Gardiner in 1978 and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in 2017.
