Cape Town, South Africa (News of The South) – An easy to read Bible for the deaf was yesterday launched at the St George’s Cathedral by American humanitarian organisation, The Bible Society of South Africa.
The Bible Society of South Africa used 50 translators, most of whom are deaf, to write the Bible in simple English with thousands of footnotes and illustrations.
Team leader of the Bible Society of South Africa Rocco Hough said, “the Sign Language Bible is very difficult to prepare because there are different dialects.
This is a written printed Bible. The first printed English Bible for the deaf from the Bible Society in the world.
This is the first one fully Bible translated from the Greek and Hebrew that not only the deaf can read but other people that have some impairment in the language development.”
Next year, Deaf Bible Society plans to support Sign Language Bible translation efforts in South Sudan, Mozambique, Burundi, and eSwatini.
Deaf Bible Society is also starting a training school in Israel called the Josiah School of Translation. Plans are currently underway to send translation teams from Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
