(News of The South) – Based on statistical analysis conducted by medical researchers, drinking a bottle of wine a week carries the same lifetime cancer risk as smoking up to 5 cigarettes a week in men.
Alcoholic drinks contain ethanol, which irritates the body’s cells. Over a prolonged period of time, even with moderate amounts, this cell irritation can lead to cancer.
Alcohol can damage the lining of the mouth and throat causing cancer in these parts of the body. Alcohol can also impact the levels of hormones that are linked to breast cancer, and when alcohol is digested it can break down into compounds that cause bowel cancer.
These types of cancers are largely attributed to alcohol and cigarettes, Blood (acute myeloid leukemia), Bladder, Breast, Colon and Rectum, Esophagus, Kidney and Renal Pelvis, Larynx, Lungs, Trachea and Bronchus, Mouth and throat, Pancreas, and Stomach.
Cigarettes and alcohol also play a pivotal role in the formation of prostate cancer which is most prevalent amongst African men.
Regular checkups are also imperative, according to Dr. Greg Boustead a South African Urological and Robotic Surgeon, “many men need to take responsibility for their health by having regular check ups, including doing screening for cardiovascular risk factors and mental health. It is also crucial for men to ensure that they are more informed about prostate cancer and its risks.
Men over 40 should speak to their doctors about screening or prostate cancer, particularly if they have a family history of prostate or breast cancer in their mothers or sisters, which would make them more at risk for prostate cancer. If you are a Black African male, you are also at increased risk.”
To best avoid the risk of acquiring these types of cancers one has to simply avoid alcohol consumption and cigarettes even vaping causes cancer.
