(News of The South) – Owner of Congolese club TP Mazembe, Moise Katumbi, was on Friday named vice-president of the newly formed World Football Club Association (WFCA) in Zurich, Switzerland.
WFCA is made up of clubs across all the continents which comprise of Real Madrid (Spain), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Milan AC (Italy), Boca Juniors and River Plate (Argentina), Club America (Mexico), Guangzhou Evergrande (China), and Auckland City (New Zealand).
The first goal of the association is to ensure that the FIFA Club World Cup is an event that fans around the world will be able to watch whilst presenting the best football.
In addition, the WFCA will also be a way for clubs to solve the problems they face and to have a constructive exchange with FIFA on issues of particular interest to them.
“I am very pleased to be a founding member and vice president of the World Football Club Association, it’s a great honour to represent African football,” said Katumbi.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “my vision is that in the future, 40 or 50 clubs from different parts of the world have the legitimate ambition of winning the FIFA Club World Cup. This means that national and regional competitions need to be at that same level and that millions of fans can therefore support their favorite teams with even more passion.
The world is evolving fast and if football wants to keep growing as the main sport of the planet we need to come together in a constructive, innovative and inclusive spirit to openly talk about the challenges and issues but also the great opportunities that we have in front of us.”
Florentino Pérez the WFCA President said, “I am delighted that clubs from around the world are here today and have decided to create the World Football Club Association. This new association will provide FIFA with a credible and serious interlocutor to discuss all club related issues, starting with the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.
We are looking forward to an excellent cooperation with FIFA to move club football to a higher level.”
The WFCA will now be looking at inviting other clubs in the hope of permanently representing all clubs who participate in the FIFA Club World Cup.
