Malawi (News of The South) – With only a few days after the Malawi leader Peter Mutharika appointed tri-service Commanders in the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) he has removed Major General Alick Bentry Mhone as Army commander of landed forces.
Instead, Mutharika has appointed Davis Mtachi as landed forces commander after being promoted to the rank of Major General.
MDF spokesperson Paul Chiphwanya described the changes as normal.
He said the president being commander in Chief of the MDF has the powers to appoint people to such positions.
“Brigadier General Elias Mpasu was appointed the Deputy Land Forces Commander,
It is the president’s prerogative to make appointments regarding these positions and we just receive communication on the same from the president,” he said.
Mutharika has also made appointments of commanders and their deputies for the Airforce and Marintime Forces.
But the president’s press secretary Mgeme Kalirani expressed ignorance about the changes.
“Those issues are adminstrative and are normally handled by the Chief Secretary so I should try to get in touch with him because am hearing this from you,
And that is why the communication of the appointments of the commanders also came from the Chief Secretary to the office of the president,” Kalirani said.
