Malawi (News of The South) – The country’s first Lady Getrude Mutharika has challenged the local media to play a key role in breaking stigma around Infertility amongst women.
Mutharika said dissemination of information on awareness about these issues could provide room for mind set.
“Information is power. The media is the driving force in ensuring that issues leading to stigmatization are fully addressed.
” This therefore, calls for critical engagement and cultivation of good working relationship between the stake holders and media on these issues of human rights,” Mutharika said.
The patron for Beautify Malawi Trust further said Infertility in some cases fuels gender-based violence hence a need to roll out the process of demystifying the problem.
In his remarks the Merck Executive Officer, Rasha Kelej said society must understand that even women or couples that struggle with Infertility can contribute to the development of communities and the world at large.
“There are a lot of people that lack knowledge. People have to understand that women are not all about conceiving. They can still be very important also to understand that Infertility affects males and females equally,” Kelej said.
The information and Civic education minister, Mark Botomani said the media has always been a key component addressing misconceptions about Infertility.
