Ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi`s Former Prime Minister has been arrested by Egyptian police following a major car- bomb on a police building.

The attack is believed to have killed at least 16 people.

Ex Prime Minister Hisham Qandil who also faces jail after being convicted for failing to respect a court ruling while in office was arrested just outside Cairo with a” smuggler attempting to escape to Sudan”.

Qandil who represented an alliance of pro –Morsi Islamist groups with European mediators is known to have kept a very low profile since Morsi`s overthrow in July.

While still in office Qandil was sentenced to a year`s imprisonment sometime in April when he failed to carry out a ruling to nationalise a company privatised in 1996.

At least 15 people and 12 policemen were killed in the Nile city of Mansoura after an early morning car bomb.

Qandil was arrested soon after the bombing.

The suspect is believed to be a suicide bomber who rammed into a car with powerful explosives through barriers surrounding the building.

The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the bombing “in the strongest possible terms”.
