IDRIS ELBA has won a ‘Best Actor’ nomination at the upcoming Golden Globe awards for his role as anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is out in cinemas nationwide next month, explores Mandela’s life from his childhood through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa.

Last month, the Hackney-born actor revealed he almost declined taking the part because of the pressure and expectation surrounding acting as Mandela, who passed away at his Johannesburg home last Thursday (Dec 5).

Elba has also been nominated for ‘Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie’ for his role in BBC series, Luther where plays a troubled police detective.

12 Years a Slave, a film about a free man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery, jointly leads the awards this year along with American Hustle, bagging seven nominations including ‘Best Drama’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Screenplay’ and ‘Best Original Score’.

The film’s lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor will go head to head with Elba for the ‘Best Actor’ gong.- The Voice
