Harare, Zimbabwe(News of the South)-President Mugabe has been rapped over his insistence to walk and urged to use a wheelchair after his infamous stumble at the recent UN General Assembly in New York.
Addressing the National Assembly Southerton MP Gift Chimanikire (MDC-T) said that President Robert Mugabe’s bodyguards should not let the veteran leader walk to podiums at international conferences, but, instead, use a wheelchair.
Chimanikire said Mugabe’s bodyguards were embarrassing the veteran leader by letting him struggle to walk to podiums according to local media.
“We saw a video where the President was shown struggling to walk to the podium at a United Nations conference, but I observed that Presidents from other countries are wheeled to the podium,” he alleged.
“Why did our President’s bodyguards allow him to be embarrassed and left him to walk to the podium instead of being wheeled?”, he said.
Mugabe has had numerous walking mishaps due to his old age and last year received a special chair from his party allies to use in private and assumed to be an expensive kind of a wheelchair.
In public he has however refused to utilise specially improvised walking aids though the results have been embarrassing for the nation.
