Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-The ongoing succession battle has taken another twist after Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko issued a public rebuke of his counterpart and fellow Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa after the latter claimed to have been poisoned.
Speaking during the memorial service for the late heroine Shuvai Mahofa in Gutu on Saturday, Mnangagwa allegedly stated that he had been ingested with poisonous substances in Gwanda during one of President Mugabe’s Interface rallies.
The statement has however drawn the ire of Mphoko who, in a statement accused Mnangagwa of trying to ‘fan ethnic tensions for political purposes’.
Acccording to Mphoko, Mnangagwa’s doctor of 20 years has already previously refuted talk of poisoning.
"At the Gweru Presidential Youth Interface Rally President Mugabe revealed that , three days earlier,he had met with Mnangagwa's medical doctor in the presence of Mnangagwa and that the doctor.... told the President that his long standing patient had not been food poisoned"
The friction between the two is the latest in a continuously heated battle to succeed Mugabe who has been in South Africa on a state visit.
