Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – Macro- Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister Dr Obert Mpofu on Monday said government is concerned with misconceptions about Zimbabwe’s investment climate due to inadequate information availed to potential investors.
Speaking at the launch of an Invest in Zimbabwe handbook in Harare, Mpofu said the book was going to provide critical information on the investment opportunities available to investors as well as policies, regulations and incentives that can be accessed by investors.
“I am therefore confident that the Invest in Zimbabwe Handbook will facilitate the demystification of the Zimbabwean investment climate and, in the process, promote investment thus boosting the much needed FDI inflows in the country.
“The Handbook highlights the vast resources that Zimbabwe possesses.
“Zimbabwe has enough natural resources at its disposal to sustain itself but what we need is investment in those natural resources to tap into these and to value-add and beneficiate them and this calls for a well-detailed investment handbook that will provide requisite facts thereby persuading potential investors to take the final step from enquiries to actual investment.
“Whilst appreciating the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure an attractive investment climate, misconceptions about the Zimbabwean investment climate are partially attributed to lack of adequate information being availed to potential investors.
“This has been among the chief causes of the unimpressive FDI inflows which have remained at below half a billion US dollars over the years while our neighbours such as Zambia and Mozambique have harvested billions in FDI inflows,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Macro- Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Permanent secretary Dr Desire Sibanda said the handbook was
going to raise awareness and attract investment into various sectors of the economy thereby contributing to the economic goals.
“The Handbook will go a way in creating awareness of Zimbabwe as an investment destination loaded with opportunities and will assist in putting Zimbabwe on the investment map”
“This is envisaged to attract the much, needed investment into various sectors of our economy thereby contributing towards the achievement of the growth and development goals as spelt out in the country’s economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZimAsset) and broadly to the achievement of the Agenda 2063 goals as well as the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs).
He added that Government will remain committed to creating an enabling business environment upon which investments should thrive.
