SONY PICTURES is attempting to clear up the fallout from the recent hacking scandal by issuing legal action against Twitter if the social media giant does not block posts that publish the studio’s stolen information.

The legal threat comes after last month’s online theft of private data belonging to Sony, including employee information, film scripts and sensitive emails between senior executives.

According to Deadline, Sony have employed top lawyer David Boies to help the company fight back in the wake of the damaging hack, which was carried out by a group calling itself Guardians of Freedom.

In an email sent to social media firm’s general counsel Vijaya Gadde, it is reported that Boies said his client will “hold Twitter responsible for any damage or loss arising from such use or dissemination by Twitter [if] stolen information continues to be disseminated by Twitter in any manner.”

The hackers, whom US authorities have linked to North Korea, claimed the cyber attack on Sony was in response to the studio’s production of comedy film The Interview, which lampoons North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Earlier this month, Sony decided to scrap the film’s US theatrical release but says it still aims to release the movie, which portrays an assassination scene featuring Kim, on other platforms.

Sony Pictures chairman Amy Pascal has been at the centre of the damaging leaks, with many of her emails being published. The latest revelation was that she thought British star Idris Elba should be the next actor to play James Bond after Daniel Craig retires as 007. – Voice
