KAMPALA- A primary school teacher has been remanded on accusations of sodomising an 11-year-old pupil.
Mr George Makande, 32, a teacher at Mwebaza Primary School in Wakiso District, appeared before Kasangati Grade One Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He is alleged to have waylaid the boy in the school dormitory.
However, Ms Irene Nakimbugwe, the deputy spokesperson of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), said Mr Makande had been charged with aggravated defilement because he was the minor’s teacher. Mr Makande was also the school warden.
A person convicted of aggravated defilement is liable to a maximum sentence of death.
Mr William Ssebina, the director of the school, said Mr Makande had spent more than two years at the school but must have developed the heinous idea “after we assigned him to work with the kids.
I can’t keep quiet about this whole matter because I am a father and I don’t wish this for my children”.
The boy is receiving treatment from various hospitals including St Francis Hospital Nsambya and Naguru Hospital.
Attending to the boy, the mother, Ms Jane Nakate, said they had been receiving threats from the accused’s relatives.
“We have been threatened that we forged letters. The reason we came out is because the relatives of the suspect have gone to the media claiming that we are framing him (the teacher),” she said.
The police surgeon’s report, a copy of which this newspaper has seen, shows that “the boy had loose sphincters and was passing out faeces without control and had a scar in the anus”.
A medical examination the police surgeon conducted on the suspect at Nsambya Police Health Centre IV found the accused’s mental status normal.
What the boy says
The boy recounts that his warden first abused him during the first term of the school year.
“It was after bathing and I was naked smearing jelly on my body when teacher Makande took me to his room and used me. He told me that I should not tell anybody or he would kill me.
“I did not tell my mother what happened when she came to visit me on visitation day. After she left, it happened again,” the boy recounts. He said he was abused by the teacher on several occasions leading to anal pains between April and May this year.
The boy says he first revealed to his mother what had happened to him when she (mother) told him that the teacher had told her he had been misbehaving at school by refusing to do work in the dormitory.
“I told her that I hate that teacher and when she asked me why I narrated to her what had happened to me. I could not sit properly due to the pain,” he said.-Monitor
