(News of The South) – We live in an era of success; it’s what everyone is talking about. Whether it’s their quest for success, or just talking about someone who has succeeded, people can’t get enough of success. It seems like the whole world is obsessed with success, question is; are you one of them?

There is nothing wrong about being obsessed with success, in a world that has seen many things going the wrong way, it is encouraged. We all want to succeed, I think of the need to succeed to be more innate than anything else, but sometimes it seems we want to succeed for all the wrong reasons hence the reason why people are getting obsessed with success nowadays.

Succeeding just for the sake of it won’t do you any good. Why do you want to succeed? Success is the message being preached in schools. People don’t really know what else to do in life, they think that if they are successful then everything else is ok.

Goals and objectives should differ from one person to the next. That’s the only way we can maintain some form of balance in this world. If we all go for the same thing then there will be a problem. Resources aren’t enough for each and every one of us to share them equally. In economics, there has always been the problem of scarcity and choice given limited resources and unlimited needs.

Success in itself is something general; we can all succeed on different fields. Some may succeed in technology, some chemistry and the politics, there are so many things to do in this world, and we cannot exhaust the possibilities. But the desire to succeed shouldn’t be an obsession because in the end it will do more harm than good.

There are rehabilitation centers for people suffering from many forms of addiction like drugs, alcohol and sex and even an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder requires some drugs and psychotherapy to treat it. This is all because addiction or any obsession is not good to anyone whether it may bring something good out of a person or not. It is bad in itself.

Because of this quest to succeed which is always growing so big, people are getting of their way and sacrificing a lot if it means they will succeed in the end. People are working themselves into exhaustion, depriving themselves of the luxuries that they should enjoy as part of the benefits they derive from succeeding. Speaking of sacrifices, people are even going into trading their souls if it means that they will succeed in anything they do at the end.

What we should all note is that, we can live a satisfying life without attaining major success. We may not be able to quantify success, but there are certain times when people would have gone too far to succeed. To be honest, sometimes it doesn’t make sense having more than you will ever need.

Before you drive yourself nuts, trying hard to succeed, ask yourself the real reason you would like to succeed. If you cannot come up with a satisfactory answer and still want to succeed, then you just might have an obsession to succeed. Failure to have a compelling reason to have something is always an indication that you aren’t supposed to have it or go that way.

Just because you can work hard and succeed doesn’t mean you ought to. The meaning of life doesn’t only come from achievement. There are many people who have achieved a lot of good things in their lives but were still not satisfied. Don’t just go for success, because success has no limit, you will continue wanting more and more until you drive yourself to the edge, go instead for happiness, it’s a better obsession to have. Don’t wear yourself out for what people will think.
