Zimbabweans To March To Embassy In Pretoria To Demand For Diaspora Vote
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa. (News of The South) Former Vice President Of Zimbabwe Joice Mujuru`s party, People First (PF) will march to the Zimbabwean embassy in Pretoria to demand a Diaspora vote on April 16, 2016.
The party coordinators from South Africa’s ten provinces met and resolved to approach the government and demand a Disapora vote.
Darlington Sibanda, the People First youth coordinator in South Africa told News of the South after their meeting in Soshanguve in Pretoria North on Sunday that they will demand a Diaspora vote for the next elections. He said many Zimbabweans some staying afar like CapeTown (which is about 1938 Km from Beitbridge) do not have money to travel to Zimbabwe to cast their vote. Sibanda said, “We have agreed as PF coordinators in South Africa that we march to the Zimbabwean embassy on April 16, 2016 to demand a Diaspora vote. If the Zim embassy can function in this country, surely they can facilitate that we vote in South Africa. We are also on a campaign to encourage people to register to vote.”
He stated that they will hand over the petition with their demands. Sibanda who is the nephew of the former war veteran`s chairperson Jabulani Sibanda said the government must come up with a way for Zimbabweans to register and vote in South Africa. He said they want to use the peaceful and legal means, he said, “If they ignore our demand for a Diaspora vote, we will camp at the Zim embassy. We will disrupt its operation so that it does not function properly. We will go and block the way at the entrance.”
The PF South African chairperson, Lawrence Mavhaire told News of the South that they are not asking for a favour from the government but demanding what belongs to them according to the constitution. He also stated that they are prepared to go to the SADC and the AU over the matter. In the last elections, South African citizens based in various parts o the world voted in the centres their government had established. Mavhaire who is the son of the former Energy and Power Development Minister, Dzikamai Mavhaire said they have former ZANU PF, MDC-T and ZAPU among other political parties who have joined their party. He said, “We are calling on all Zimbabweans to come and join us to build Zimbabwe. We are using the experiences and failures of other political parties to build our country. We know the playing field is not level but people should not lose hope because of that but register and take part in the elections.”
Clememnce Mushayabasa, the war veterans coordinator in South Africa addressed the PF encouraging them to be brave and vote ZANU PF out of power. Mushayabasa, a war veteran said, “I removed the white regime and I cannot fail to remove Mugabe from power. All over the world when
a person is old he retires on pension, why doesn’t Mugabe retire? He is finished, do not be afraid but be brave.”
Mushayabasa accused ZANU PF of putting their interest first before the majority’s wishes. He stated that his party intends to put the interest of Zimbabweans first before the big wigs’.
