The flying Zimbabwean public has been experiencing high opportunity costs for a long time with huge negative individual and national macroeconomic effects.
Imagine it might take more than 24hrs to fly to or from London to or from Harare due to via Dubai, Qatar, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Kigali, OR TAMBO, etc whilst other nationalities with direct flights arrive same day or even under 10hrs.
The amount of time lost let alone jet lag fatigue is a great private and social cost to our domestic economy. Mind you all nationalities or economies are blessed with same 24hrs per day. If we spent zillions hours in transit we are losing out big time on Productive, leisure or tourism opportunities, reducing our domestic GDP.
In addition, the flying Zimbabwean public has been paying huge sums of air tickets fees to foreign airlines, losing much needed scarce forex inflows in our domestic economy resulting in a lot of other negative multiplier effects eg aviation jobs jobs like air hostesses away to foreign airlines, reducing domestic GDP etc.
If well managed and sustained, these new airbirds will go a long way in improving Zimbabwe’s international and regional connectivity, boosting productive, tourism or leisure times much to the benefit of our national macroeconomic objectives ie economic growth, low unemployment, low inflation and sound BOP – TLN Economics, 2018
