Zimbabwe has unanimously been awarded the World Best Tourist Destination for 2014 title by European Union Council on Tourism and Trade for promoting ecotourism and successfully convening an international conference last year.
Addressing journalists at a press conference Tourism and Hospitality Minister Walter Mzembi said Zimbabwe has been chosen as the best tourism destination and most favorite cultural destination by the European council of tourism and trade.
“Zimbabwe received a nomination a month ago for the world’s best tourist destination for 2014 title that is chaired by the European council on tourism and trade and at the same time Zimbabwe must under consideration be the world most favorite cultural destination for 2014 by the same council”,
“the Minister was also nominated for an academic designation in the European council of tourism, so a month an ago was just mere nominations and iam happy to share with you two communications which we now own as the Republic of Zimbabwe they were endorsed Thursday by the cabinet from European council on Tourism”, said Mzembi.
The Council on tourism and Trade said the meeting held on May 3, 2014 saw the board of the European council of tourism and trade unanimously adopting the recommendation of the panel of experts to award the title of word best tourist destination for 2014 and favorite cultural destination for 2014 to the Republic of Zimbabwe.
Apart from that, it further says the country has done a lot in promoting eco-tourism leading to a lot of community support in the preservation of natural resources.
“Among other reasons is the promotion and support offered to a new concept of community natural protection supporting tourism friendly to nature, with low ecological impact and preservation of natural biodiversity and protection of endangered species and areas,” said the EU Council.
The Council says there is no doubt that the country has the capacity to organize top world events, and is a safe destination.
According to the Council, Zimbabwe has unequivocally demonstrated that it is a safe, open and perfectly managed power house. Apart from that, it further says the country has done a lot in promoting eco-tourism leading to a lot of community support in the preservation of natural resources.
The title which was won for the first time in African by Zimbabwe had been in the hands of countries like Arab Republic 2007, Turkey 2008, United Arab Emirates 2009, South Korea 2010, and Arab Emirates 2011 and in 2012 and 2013 the tittle was scooped by Trinidad and Laos in 2013.
