Harare 09August 2017(News of the South) – Zimbabwean government on Wednesday received a donation of two (2) Land cruisers vehicles, 10 laptops and 3 Desktops and other ancillary consumables for Rural District Councils (RDCs) from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), aimed at promoting effective governance in rural local authorities, better service delivery and quality by rural local authorities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage Minister Abednego Ncube expressed his gratitude to UNICEF and assured the nation that the donation will go a long way in efficiently deliver quality services to rural citizens.
“I am therefore pleased to extend my profound appreciation and gratitude to the Country Director Dr Mohamed Ayoya and UNICEF Zimbabwe Country team for this gesture that will certainly improve the day to day operations of my Ministry.
“I am happy to note that the donation also includes laptops for 10 Rural District Councils that have already trained on Quantrix Budgeting Modelling.
“Let me take this opportunity to once again thank for your timely and generous donation and l am convinced that this will strengthen the already existing relationship between my ministry and UNICEF.
The Ministry of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage administers Rural Local Authorities scattered around 60 Districts in 8 Rural Provinces of Zimbabwe, which constitutes close to 70% of the national population.
Speaking at the same occasion, UNICEF Representative to Zimbabwe Dr Mohammed Ayoya said Multiple Overlapping Deprivation Analysis (MODA) states that, 90, 1 percent of the children experienced at least one deprivation, 83, 3 of these are children in rural areas.
“Various analyses show that the rural population, particularly children continue to lag behind their urban peers, in access to WASH, Education, Health and Protection, which effects their ability to thrive, survive and achieve their full potential in life.
