Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) -The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has raised concerns at cases of torture allegedly performed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and other state security agents in the country.

This comes in the wake of the abduction and torture of Tajamuka members Promise Mkwanazi and Partson Dzamara last week whilst they planned a demonstration against the bond notes.

The two were taken to unnamed places where they were tortured before being released.

Speaking in Harare on Friday National Vendors Union of Zimbabwe leader Sten Zvorwadza also alleged that one member of his organisation had been hospitalised after suspected state security agents broke his legs.

The previous week suspected state agents also burnt the same person’s car.

Speaking in Harare the chairperson of the ZHRC Mr Elasto Hilarious Mugwadi said they are concerned at the cases of torture in the country and would be taking it to the government.

“We are concerned at the cases of torture in the country even in cases of people who are in police detention”.

“It seems that we took over the mentality of the white men from pre-independence where the jails where meant for black people but that has to change”.

“We also have to treat each other with respect as Zimbabweans and avoid the use of torture”, Mugwadi said.

Torture is prohibited in Chapter 4 of the constitution which prohibits physical, psychological or the treatment of a person in an inhuman and degrading way.
