Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Africa’s candidate for the UNWTO Secretary General’s post Walter Mzembi from Zimbabwe has lost to a Georgian candidate in elections held in Madrid today.
Mzembi who is the Zimbabwean Tourism Minister lost by 15 votes to 18 during the second round of voting having won the first round.
The news comes as a shock after all of Africa agreed to endorse Mzembi and even threatened sanctions on Seychelles after its candidate tried to contest.
Mzembi’s loss has once again has stalled the chance for Africa to have its first Secretary General for the UNWTO.
