(News of The south) – The Buccaneers were a bit more bullish and left the fans crying for more as they walloped The Brazilians at their own backyard.
I had the opportunity to visit Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sarturday , the hunting home ground of Mamelodi Sundowns who were playing The ‘Buccaneers’ Orlando Pirates. The ‘Bucs’ posted a 3-1 win over the Brazilians.
The Absa Premiership title is growing bigger in the Orlando Pirates camp as they subdued a well oiled and structured side of the ‘Brazilians’Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on sweatering heat on Saturday afternoon.
In the second minute Orlando Pirates found the back of the net through Ntsikilelo Nyauza and before the half time break Pirates was two up through Mpho Makola and finally the third goal was netted by Luvuyo Memela. The only solitary goal for Mamelodi Sundowns was scored by the slippery Percy Tau.
The match was pulsating and both teams didn’t want to take chances as they fought from the first whistle. Hard running Luvuyo Memela gave the Brazilians a torrid time at the defence but found the stalwart defence of Ricardo Nancinemento so strong and water tight.
Orlando Pirates attacked from the start until the end and were so good in the first half and allowed Mamelodi Sundowns to play the ball. Mamelodi threatened Orlando Pirates through Percy Tau who fought a lone battle operating from both wings and giving dangerous crosses into the box with towering Antony Lafour missing a fine header. Jackson Mabokgwane the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was outstanding and was voted man of the match as he made brilliant saves.
Percy Tau had a good game but lacked the help of the stinging killer punch at the front. Vilakazi and Khama Billiart were missing and they could have made a difference. Billiart was not even in the last 16 and he was watching with other players from the terraces.
Can African underdevelopment be a blessing in disguise? Can we take advantage of being so far behind from first world countries?
