News of the South HARARE –    SADC has applauded Zimbabwe for upholding the peace keeping agenda by enhancing training of a standby force at the Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre (RPTC) in Harare.

During their two day visit to the country, the SADC team visited the Interpol Regional Bureau and the RPTC for an assessment and taking stock of the current programmes running at the institution.

Addressing journalists at a local hotel in Harare, SADC Executive Secretary, Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax said they signed an memorandum of understanding with the Zimbabwe government that seeks to support the peacekeeping programmes.

Speaking at the same event Mr Jorge Cardoso, the Director of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security recommended the need to be technologically advanced in military equipment to capacitate forces to fight modern wars.

“We also need to make sure that those people affected in conflicts should be protected from abuse especially women,” Cardoso added.

According to Dr Tax, Zimbabwe will assume chairmanship for the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security in August next year running at the institution.
