“Politics Hampering Service Delivery In Harare” : Manyenyeni
BY TAFADZWA EVANS MURANGANWA.
Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni has said it will be a mammoth task for Harare City and other local authorities to improve service delivery with the current political environment.
Speaking at a public meeting that was organized by the Combined Harare Residents Trust on Wednesday , Manyenyeni said attaining world class city status may be a pipe dream with the current crop of leadership both in government and local government.
“What are the ingredients for us to attain the world class city status?
“The world class city status can be brought about through a lot of other components among a world class government and do you think we have a world class government when it is headed by President Robert Mugabe,” said Manyenyeni.
Harare City is currently realizing $13 million and salaries are gobbling $9 million dollars and Manyenyeni said there was the need to cut expenditure but again said there recommendations still awaits decision from the Local Government and Housing minister Saviour Kasukuwere .
“Our salaries are chewing most of our revenue and we have tabled recommendations that awaits approval form the Local Government minister ,” Manyenyeni told residents.
Residents had flurry of questions posed to the Mayor and some other councilors who flanked him chief among them was the issue of water where most residents complained about the erratic water supplies and the ‘dirty’ water coming out of taps.
Manyenyeni and the Local Government minister Kasukuwere have clashed on many issues and the prominent one being the appointment of James Mushore as the Town Clerk.
They have dragged each other to courts.
Kasukuwere has been accused of trying to take control of the local authorities by introducing the Local Government Bill.
