Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)- Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has finally managed to have Chitenderano High School electrified, years after former President Robert Mugabe delivered computers at the institution.
The move by Mugabe was heavily ridiculed in the private media as a sick joke on a community that had no electricity to power the machines.
Mliswa has however managed to engage the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) which is now in the process of electrifying the school.
Speaking to this publication the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy Chairman said development was his core mandate.
“I’m aiming to bring real development to Norton and bringing electricity is one of the sustainable initiatives that I had earmarked and even promised.”
“Chitenderano was given computers some time back and they became obsolete long ago due to lack of use as they was no power at the institution, however I’m seeking to rectify that,” he said.
Hon Mliswa added that too many politicians had hurt the country by following wrong forms of campaigning which involve giving people foodstuffs and other temporary things.
“It’s a handicap that we have to deal with as a nation. You cannot have people voting for you because you have given them rice and flour.”
“Those are things they should be able to buy for themselves after you create the right environment,” he added.
ICT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira conceded that absence of electricity had impinged on the computer program.
“The former President donated several computers to schools that exist in very poor communities,” he said.
Hon Mliswa has also previously highlighted on the need for the ICT Ministry to work together with the Energy Ministry to avoid situations of computers given to schools without elctricity.
Norton has experienced a blitz of developmental initiatives led by Mliswa which include roads being graded, boreholes sunk in various areas and progressive use of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which most legislators corruptly squander.
