Uganda, KAMPALA. A lot has been said about this year’s Miss Uganda beauty pageant. That it would not happen. That it has been taken over by UPDF to promote agriculture. Well, the truth is out. This year’s beauty pageant is on, after its launch yesterday in Munyonyo, Kampala.
And no, UPDF has not taken over anything, according to Ms Brenda Nanyonjo of Kezi Entertainment, the Miss Uganda franchise holder.
“We will interact with the UPDF at various points, as we will with National Agriculture Advisory Services (Naads) and other organisations that have expressed to work with us. Nobody has taken over anything as it was reported,” Ms Nanyonjo told Daily Monitor.
The pageant will this year run under the theme: Making Agriculture Entrepreneurship Attractive to Young Women in Uganda”.
The theme, according to Ms Nanyonjo will require the next Miss Uganda to promote agriculture among young women in the country.
“The pageant needed an idea that will change communities. And yes, there is beauty with a purpose, but then there is also the very big problem of youth unemployment. We merged that with the back bone of our economy and got a general theme,” she said.
Last month, Gen Salim Saleh told a gathering at the pass out of UPDF officers being prepared to take over some roles in Naads that the army would use the pageant to attract young women to agriculture. – Monitor
