(News of The South) – Zimbabwe, despite its economic hardships, has beaten South Africa and other SADC countries in building a mini “Titanic” Houseboat. It has proved to be a hit on Zimbabwe roads on the way to be delivered to its happy customers in Botswana.
Unlike the Irish company’s work on the Titanic done at the seaside factory, Zimbabwe’s boat maker is in a landlocked country.
The gigantic houseboat caused traffic disruptions where ever it passed right from Harare’s Masasa factory GDI to Masvingo and then Victoria Falls before crossing into Botswana it’s final destination.
The African Dream, with a carrying capacity of 300 people, is a houseboat believed to be one of the biggest built in Zimbabwe. This has been a spectacle along the Harare-Masvingo Highway as it passed through Masvingo at the weekend after a painstaking five-day journey from the makers in Harare.
The makers GDI Engineering in Msasa, Harare, made special transport arrangements for the delivery of the product by road through to Victoria Falls en route to Botswana. A longer route was chosen to Victoria Falls to prevent traffic chaos and congestion, associated with the Harare-Bulawayo road.
The journey to Victoria Falls was expected to take 10 days.
“We are moving at approximately 30km/hour on good roads like this one ( Road), but the journey from Harare to Masvingo was painstakingly slow,” said one crew member.
