Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) -Highlanders fc started the match on a higher note forcing the visited City to back peddle everytime when ever in possession.Rodrick Mutuma made a solo run as early as the 6th minute and laid the ball to Prince Dube but the latter failed to utilise the chance from outside the 18 yards box.A lighting counter attack was initiated from the back by City in the 7th minute only to be let down by the veteran striker Mukhokheli Dube who failed to beat Aerial Sibanda in goals for Highlanders.
Highlanders camped in the City half playing an entertaining passing game with Allen Gahadzikwa and Simon Munawa dictating the pace in the middle of the park giving all sorts of problems to the Bulawayo City defensive linkman Kelvin Madzongwase who was the main barrier to break City back line, spreading the passes to the two Bosso front men Rodrick Mutuma and Prince Dube who seem to be co-ordinating well and forming a deadly partnership considering their runs off the ball and their combination. In the 8th minute Mutuma was fouled inside the 18 yard box by Zibusiso Sibanda but the referee of the day Musundire waved play on.Allen Gahadzikwa was then tripped by Nyasha Mukumbi but Highlanders failed to utilise the set piece fluffing a good chance to convert.
Musundire instead of awarding an advantage to Highlanders when Prince Dube headed towards goal and thrust Bosso upfront beating Aron from close range, the referee flashed a yellow card to Munyaradzi Mangadze in the 18th minute for a foul on Simon Munawa and opted to award a setpiece. The awarded freekick was then taken by young promising Highlanders right back Bukhosi Ncube but his shot was weak and was easily dealt by Aron Ngwenya who made an easy catch. In the 23rd minute Munawa made a good run from the right flank and his shot was deflected for corner kick. The corner kick was easily saved by Ngwenya.Trevor Ndlovu won a corner kick after a counter attack which was then taken by Morris Kadzola in the 44th minute but Zibusiso’s header went wide. The match went to halftime in a nil all scoreline, with City back four absorbing the pressure thereby restricting Highlanders to trouble their goalkeeper.
Highlanders maintained their dominance in the second half piling pressure from all angles,Prince Dube was fouled by Trevor Ndlovu in the 49th minute outside the 18 yard box.Bukhosi was again given the responsibility to take the set piece but his shot was easily dealt with by City goalminder.
A through ball was laid to Mkhokheli Dube by the national team fringe player Sipho Ndlovu but the ball was timely shielded away by the evergreen Peter Muduhwa.Allen made a solo run in the 50th minute towards City territory but the dangerous looking shot was blocked by Zibusiso Sibanda. On the other side, a ferocious shot by Trevor was blocked by Honest Moyo in 51st minute. Two minutes late Prince was fouled by Mukumbi and the resultant freekick Eric Mudzingwa headed wide.
A long ball was lobbed by Brian Banda to Prince Dube who raced towards the City goal and he rounded-off the advancing goalkeeper Aron before placing the ball in an empty net and Bosso took the lead in the 56th minute of the match to make it 1-0.The goal was a replica of the goal that he score against FC Platinum in the ZNA semi final charity shield match.
Four minutes later Dube made a solo run towards City goal area he spotted an unmarked Mutuma and he threaded an accurate pass and Mutuma made no mistake unleashing a grounder that left Ngwenya sprawling on the ground but the goal did not count as he was adjudged that he was in an offside position.
In the 63rd minute Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu made a double substitution pulling out Eddie Nkulungo and Mkhokheli Dube and he introduced Innocent Kutsanzira and Mkhululi Moyo.Prince Dube got the ball on the left flank in 65th minute and laid to an unmarked Munawa who made an easy tap in to put his name on the score sheet making it 2-0 scoreline.
Bulawayo tried to pile pressure in the last quarter of the match forcing several set pieces especial corner kicks. In the 67th minute Mkhululi’s header went over the bar.Erol Akbay then made a substitution in the 69th minute bringing in Adrian Silla for Allen Gahadzikwa.A minute later a dangerous looking cross from Kadzola was blocked by Honest for corner kick which was wasted by City.Akbay then pulled out Mutuma and in came Ralph “Banolila” Matema in the 76th minute.Mandla Mpofu then made his final substition in 83rd minute pulling out Heritan Masuku and he introduced Rainsom Pavari.
Nothing materialised from the pressure by the visited besides earning quite a number of set pieces in the dying minutes of the match. The match ended in a 2-0 scoreline in favour of the home side Highlanders.
Can African underdevelopment be a blessing in disguise? Can we take advantage of being so far behind from first world countries?
