Harare, Zimbabwe(News of the South)-Verily,verily so,in each and every generation God raises an array of personals to be couriers of his word and he calls some of them prophets and apostles. However the body of Christ can never be in completion without the ministers of the gospel of God,who interprets, prophecy and teach their society through their soothingly quenching voices and God called them musicians. Pastor Gukuta is one of the exceptions of this phenomenal gift ,as he fits into that billing of “Angels” that are gifted with rapturous voices to use in the house of the Lord as they praise, worship and embark on soul winning for the kingdom of Christ.
Pastor Gukuta is a young family man who is blessed with a beautiful ,God fearing wife,Grace and a son. It is often said,a journey of a thousand miles always starts with a single step and it has indeed taken a lot of steps, hard working, trials and tribulations for the charismatic gospel singer to be were he currently is in the gospel music arena.
“I started composing my first song in 2004 but did not have access to studios because I was in the rural areas. In 2014 I was able to release my debut album ‘Zvakatanga Sedambe'”
The word of God is very clear as to what the “great commission” is all about, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Surely ,Pastor Gukuta must have been reminiscing of this “great commission” during the interview with News of the South he reiterated this in a valor tone,
“I didn’t choose to sing gospel but this is my calling to spread the gospel through music. Rather I don’t struggle to compose a song ,the thing is just in me.”
In the Christianity context, a man without the Holy Ghost is a blind man. He may not know it but that is what blindness is all about. However when the Holy Spirit comes into one’s life,he or she will no longer be blind because he will cause you to see what others can not see. No winder why Pastor Gukuta has taken the initiative to let the Holy Spirit lead him in his musical endeavors.
“I was inspired with so many on my 3 albums, firstly the Holy Spirit inspired me to sing some spiritual songs like ‘Vanogara vakadaro’ on my debut album, secondly, things that happen in my life, like on my second album, I was thanking God for what he enables me to do in my life. Also I dream some of my music.”
“I have a good relationship with T n C Records, they help me to come up with my projects. I don’t have a problem with them (The Divine Servants, his musical group)we respect each other ,they know I’m the leader ,they respect that and me too.”
A host of artist tend to lose their originality during collaboration especially when an uprising star brushes shoulders with the so called show stoppers who are already in stardom. Thus inevitably so,that News of the South put out the question of collaborations to Pastor Gukuta since he has already paved way for collaborations with a renowned gospel artist Rumbie Zvirikuzhe on his album “Zvakaitwa Nenyasha.”Do collaboration just come out of the blue or artists need to have some sort of chemistry to pull off an outstanding, stellar collaboration, one wonder!
” Yes ,Rumbie helped me with 3 collaborations on my second album “zvakaitwa Nenyasha.” I just asked her help and she just came and sang the songs, she’s just a genius and it came out perfect. I support the issue of collaborations because it helps upcoming artists to be recognized in that context. If artists have more time to interact and practicing they will have a better project. Resources permitting we want to have a collaboration with Pastor Charamba, locally and internationally wanted to do it with Sipho Makabhane, currently we are planning something with Roe Makawa and Tsitsi Chawapiwa.
Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm, just when a caterpillar thought its life was over it turned into a beautiful appreciated butterfly. However when the hurdle and barricade of air play scarcity, sponsorship, spite from music promoters ,ignorance from fans and other artists engulfs the path of an upcoming artist then that promising talent might just remain a pipe dream. In an interview with News of the South Pastor Gukuta reiterated the concerns and possible solutions that can make or break artists especially in a down trodden economically challenged country like Zimbabwe.
“The most challenging aspect of our industry is lack of proper funds ,poor air play, spite from fellow artists and listeners before hearing our stuff, lack of sponsorship and support since we are still growing. In Zimbabwe we need sponsors who search for talent within grassroots not to appear when the artist has grown. Air play must not be biased through bribery neither on who you are and listeners must learn to appreciate upcoming artists.”
Anyone who is to have the honor and privilege of listening to Pastor Gukuta and The Divine Servants’ music like I did, let me assure you, you will understand why Pastor Gukuta and The Divine Servants have such favor and anointing to grace the tag “Greatest of our generation” in the gospel music arena. Their music is soul winning, soul cleansing, possesses uplifting lyrics that will leave one blessed and another lost soul added in the Great Kingdom of God. In his parting words in our interview, Pastor Gukuta clearly had a lot of glad tidings to shower his followers and other upcoming artists.
“I promise good things, this year already we have done a single, we are shooting quality videos and of cause we will have a new album. To those new in the industry, I just say press on until it is well, hard work never disappoints.”
