Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-First Lady Grace Mugabe has dashed the hopes of any aspiring candidates keen on contesting to succeed President Mugabe, stating that only Mugabe himself will choose a successor when he feels.
Addressing a throng bus-ed in to attend the President’s Youth Interface rally in Gweru at the weekend the vocal First Lady said Mugabe had that prerogative and everyone will support whoever he chooses.
Grace went on to say that Mugabe’s lengthy spell as President is actually God’s desire.
“If God still wants Mugabe in power, he will stay with us, God wants Mugabe to lead us, and when it’s time for Mugabe to decide that his body does not allow him to go on, he will say it himself.”
He will say, “Look for a successor, I want to rest,” she told party supporters gathered in the city of Gweru.
The remarks of the First Lady, fresh from a South African scandal where she bashed bloody a young model she found with her sons, are contrary to Mugabe and the party’s constitution.
The 93 year old has previously insisted that the ruling ZANU-PF, and not him, will choose his eventual successor when the time comes.
However the First Lady and Zanu PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs has been continually challenging the President to name his successor saying this has been the trend in other countries.
According to a quoted media publication ‘the First Lady said there is nothing wrong with Mugabe naming his successor, saying the move will enable all members to rally behind one candidate.”
Mugabe has been falling apart health-wise for a long time with the world class health care he receives from foreign countries like Singapore failing to mask the negative effects of his age.
