Chivi, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Many Zimbabweans are having incorrect information about their birth dates inserted on their IDs and birth certificates due to flawed system at the Registrar General’s offices, News Of The South has learnt.
In a survey conducted by News Of The South in Chivi some people’s ages surpassed those of their parents.
One adult male who spoke to News Of The South had an ID reading that he was born in 1958 while his father’s read 1960.
The number of people with such anomalies on their identification papers is suspected to be a result of the massive government action to register citizens after independence.
Soon after independence mobile teams issued birth certificates to people. This is where the mistakes began as most people who were old did not know their actual birth dates.
Another Chivi resident chronicled a surprising happening of a miskewed formality.
“My grandmother who died last week was one of the oldest people living in this area. She was around 100 years but we saw her ID reading 1940 information which is disgraceful because her first born was born around 1930 this tells the false information which the RG office wrote on people’s IDs “said the man who spoke on condition of anomnity .
These revelations raise more challenges for the country as it gears for the 2018 elections with fears of rigging rampant among the opposition parties.
Recent calls for the granting of ID’s for thousands of undocumented villagers mostly in Matabeleland also provide another strain on the severely underfunded RG’s office and its ability to provide a proper service.0
