Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Cabinet announcement has drawn the ire of many who expected some new faces as the prequel to a new socio-economic trajectory. However ED was always going to hit into a public popularity wall.
In whatever he does the man is simply set to play the fine line between the democratic expectations of a population who presumptuously foresaw a new dispensation in the mere removal of Mugabe and the military junta that catapulted him to power.
In the new Cabinet the junta has won.
The people, so prone to climaxing into paroxysms of joy at the slightest touch have been given the most whimsical of benefits.
There has been the whittling down of the number of Deputy Ministers who are now only found in 6 Ministries.
ED himself has done away with the long motorcade and is playing at being Chinua Achebe’s A Man of the People together with goons somewhere in the shadows.
The Cabinet has however helped to dissipate quickly the false feeling of a new horizon.
It now has Air Marshal Perence Shiri. as Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) General SB Moyo as Foreign Affairs Minister and Victor Matemadanda as Deputy Minister for War Vets.
Vocal ED supporter and Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) leader Chris Mutsvangwa is now Information Minister.
Thus interaction with the foreign world is now safely ensconced in an ED stalwart’s hands just as propaganda will be driven by another vocal ED supporter.
The return of Chinamasa as Finance Minister from the wreckage heap that was Cyber Security is the redemption of a previously lost soul forever grateful at the chance and forever set to jump at the face of ED.
Another clandestine rigging of wires to draw power from one source in the Cabinet.
Souls such as David Parirenyatwa, Simon Khaya Moyo, after his spokesperson charade (in the topsy-turvy days of the mini-revolution of November) and Ziyambi Ziyambi will forever be extensions of ED.
The one centre of power maxim may be gone vocally, but practically it has resurrected through other means. ED has salvaged aggrieved souls, paid back his co-conspirators and
The very creation of a full ministry for War Vets at a time Gender has been swallowed and stapled besides Justice is a another loss for the wider world and a win for the proxy military that is War Vets.
The Prof Welshman Ncube led MDC expressed its outrage at the announcement.
“The grandiose promises made by Mnangagwa of reformism are coming to naught. As Zimbabweans we are once again painfully reminded that never does a leopard ever change its spots”
“We are seeing no departure from former President Robert Mugabe’s wanton arbitrage, pillage and self enrichment. It is clear that the jobs for pals principle is deeply entrenched in ZANU PF’s DNA, as evidenced by the recycling of deadwood into the new old Cabinet.
“Clearly this is not a progressive government that inspires hope by any standard. It is still the same old, corrupt, incompetent Zanu PF system whose only mission is self-enrichment”, it said through spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi.
During the heady days of the Out-with-Mugabe marches earlier this month, also known as Operation Restore Legacy, Chinamasa made the Public Relations blunder of uttering politically incorrect statement.
Addressing the giddy-headed crowds at Zimbabwe Grounds, loving the excitement of baring their anger at Mugabe, he blurted out that the exercise was an internal clean-up with nothing to do with opposition parties or members.
Most were flummoxed. They boooed him. We called him names. He was archaic and needed to disappear with Mugabe.
ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya corrected him and advised he adopt more politically correct slogans. However for the discerning the cat was out of the bag.
We were all hitched onto a ZANU ride and with the Cabinet announcement the party has begun shoving us down and out.
This is only the beginning and the further we go into time the more we shall be kicked further away.
Election time may see the true colours of the soldiers we hugged and kissed during the marches coming out.
