The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) has extended at least £3.5 million /US$5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) which will be channelled towards food provision to some of the dry regions in the country.

Officially launching a US$5 million WFP lean season assistance programme in the capital this Thursday, DFID  head Ms Annabel Gerry said the cash-based food assistance will help at least 97 000 people in the rural areas and about 19 000 in Harare.

The fund will be distributed to five rural districts namely Mutoko, Nyanga, Nkayi, Beitbridge and Umzingwane which according to the DFID and WFP are the most vulnerable El Nino regions.

WFP representative and country director Mr Eddie Rowe told the ZBC News that his organisation will soon inject more funds around mid-year given the possibility of a drought ahead.

The sentiments were shared by United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli who noted that the situation is a result of global warming.

A 2018 Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZIMVAC) Report indicates that at least 2.4 million of the rural population will face acute food insecurities between January and March this year.
