Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – The 2018 elections will not bring the needed economic salvation craved by the nation and a National Transitional Authority is the only answer according to People’s Democratic Party leader Tendai Biti.
Writing on social media the former Finance Minister lamented the use of elections as a gimmick for authoritarianism by the ruling Zanu-PF and watered down the public’s expectations going towards 2018.
“When everything is said and done the National Transitional Authority (NTA) remains our best foot forward. It is a strategic weapon against dying authoritarian nationalism”, he said.
Biti added that, “We will underestimate electoral authoritarianism at the expense of our people . We can’t make the mistakes of yester year”.
“The looming disaster of 2018 can be reversed by unity decisive leadership ,clarity and thought leadership.”
“We can do better .Far much better”, he said.
Biti has been calling for a NTA for a long time and it remains to be seen if other political players will support the move though it remains unlikely.
The opposition camp has been ridled with egotistical presumptions over the leadership of the supposed coalition leading to lack of progress in coming up with a solid union to contest Mugabe’s Zanu-PF.
The calls to create another likely Government of National Unity provides a telling tentativeness by the opposition to get down into the murky world of Zimbabwean elections where the ruling party’s dirty tactics have rarely acquiesced space for fair play.
Biti’s party has already produced a list of its candidates for the various constituencies in the country in a what has been deemed a negative put-down to the envisaged opposition Coalition.
